AUGUSTA — Sen. Anne Carney, D-Cape Elizabeth, earned a perfect score from the Maine Women’s Lobby for votes throughout the 132nd Legislature.
“As the federal government rolls back long-standing protections for women’s rights and safety, I am grateful for the 132nd Legislature’s commitment to advancing justice and gender equity here in Maine,” said Sen. Carney. “As Senate chair of the Judiciary Committee, I’m particularly proud to have played a role in protecting women’s access to critical reproductive healthcare and survivors’ access to the sexual violence support services that are so imperative for healing.”
Sen. Carney has been an outspoken advocate for women’s rights and health throughout her career in public service. During the 132nd Legislature, Sen. Carney sponsored LD 1139, “An Act to Provide Funding for Essential Services for Victims of Crimes.” Incorporated into the 2026 supplemental budget, the new law fills stark gaps left by federal cuts to programs for survivors of domestic and sexual violence. It directs $3 million to victim support services, including the 24/7 domestic violence helpline, safe shelters and legal representation.

Sen. Anne Carney is serving her third term in the Maine Senate, representing South Portland, Cape Elizabeth and part of Scarborough. She serves as the Senate chair of the Legislature’s Judiciary Committee and Joint Rules Committee and as a member of the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Committee.
